Fiber definitely has been the best internet we've had. 1g up and down
but they have 3 and 6gb plans. I have no endpoints that support that
and not buying new gear. I remember my first DSL was 128k down ... then cable at 1mb ... first was 56k frame relay. Yikes. That was the jam.
My first experience with the internet was a 56k leased line that came
from UC Berkeley to my company. My first cisco router, public IP
spaces, and 70+ people using that line. Thankfully, it was all text
back then and no one really knew about it except for a select few
people and a mail gateway.
Speaking of frame relay, I worked for a Big Law Firm that had a frame
relay network. They ran a 256k CIR from the main NYC office to their
hubs, then 64K circuits to the branch offices.
One Monday, I find a conference room full of attorneys from the DC
office in a conference room complaining that the network was down. They
were trying to load files from a local server - over a 64K link from SF
to LA, a 256K line carrying all west coast traffic from LAX to NYC and
a third 64K link to DC. I suggested they all take turns logging in. You
know that comic trope when 3 people try to fit through a door at the
same time, get jammed in the doorway, then stop, think about it, decide
to go one at a time, then all try to go first? Yeah, like that.
... A NEW LIFE AWAITS YOU IN THE OFF-WORLD COLONIES!
